How To Strengthen Hip Muscles

All About The Hip Muscles

Stop Stretching Your Hip Flexors! (HERE’S WHY)

The hips are an all too commonly neglected muscle group. They don’t get the same amount of attention as the chest, back, or leg muscles. Despite that, the hips are truly one of the most important muscle groups to strengthen. Why is it so crucial to build strong hips?

Here are just a few reasons:

  • Weak hips are a precursor to lower back pain, knee pain, and hip pain, as well as hip and back injuries
  • Weak hips lead to overall poor posture
  • Strong hips are needed to support the entire core and pelvic region
  • Moreover, weak hips can lead to an entire cascade of other health issues.

Tips For Doing Hip Extension Exercises

To get the best results and reduce your risk of injury, here are some helpful tips:

    • Warm up before exercising. Before starting strength training, spend 510 minutes warming up with light cardio and dynamic stretching.
    • Focus on good form. Before increasing the weight or resistance, be sure youre performing the exercise with good form.
    • Squeeze your glutes. Contracting your glutes helps you get the most out of hip extension exercises without asking the hamstrings to do all the work.
    • Maintain a neutral spine and pelvis. To put most of the attention on your glutes and other hip extensor muscles, keep your spine neutral, keep your abdominals engaged, and avoid tilting your pelvis forward or arching your lower back.

Its also a good idea to minimize the time you sit during the day. If you work from home, try to get up every 3060 minutes for at least 5 minutes at a time.

Finally, its best to incorporate 23 hip extension exercises into your lower body workout routine along with other movement patterns, such as hip abduction, adduction, and rotation.

  • Using a strap or band, keep one leg straight up while slowly lowering the other to the floor. Keep your core tight during this process because thatâs what stabilizes the spine and pelvis.
  • Repeat 5 times on each leg.

Great Exercises To Strengthen Your Hips

About 15% of people over age 65 experience hip pain. Joint deterioration, arthritis, and injury can all cause pain and stiffness that restrict your mobility and impact your quality of life. The good news is that nonsurgical treatments like exercising can significantly improve pain by strengthening your hips.

Targeted exercises build strength in the tendons, ligaments, and muscles that help your hip move. When surrounding tissues are strong, theres less strain on the bones of your hip, so youll enjoy better mobility.

The benefits of strengthening exercises dont stop at your hips, either. Hips play an important role in knee alignment, so strengthening your hips can also improve knee and leg pain.

Whether youre bothered by joint pain or you want to preserve your mobility, get a customized exercise routine from orthopedic specialist Chris Boone, MD. Dr. Boone and our team treat people who are living with hip pain, osteoarthritis, and more.

Best Knee Mobility Exercises For Strength And Stability

No matter what your wellness goals are, you can benefit from knee mobility exercises. Lacking proper knee mobility can have an affect on the entire kinetic chain, says Jeff Brannigan, program director at Stretch*d. As the largest joint in the human body, your knees carry a heavy load both literally and figurativelystiffness or injuries here can throw your entire body out of balance.

When a joint doesn’t function properly the muscles around it will be stressed in ways that they aren’t meant to be, which can lead to pain and injury, Brannigan explains. Over time, these injuries will lead to further compensation throughout the body, making the situation worse and more systemic.

Stretching routines like the best neck stretches or the best shoulder stretches, often emphasize flexibility over everything. But when it comes to knee stretches, a balance between knee mobility and knee stability is key, says Vinita Chandra Mody, MSc.PT, founder of Stroma Physical Therapy and an advisory board member for the Hospital for Special Surgery Rehabilitation Network.

Unlike flexibilitya muscle’s ability to stretchmobility is the joint’s capacity to meet its full range of motion, says Taylor Rae Almonte-Roman, C.P.T. a founding trainer at Fiture. Knee stability involves strengthening the muscles around the knee joint to prevent the dreaded over rotation that can cause injury.

Stretch And Strengthen: Corrective Exercises For Hip Flexors

    Reading Time: 10 minutes

    Date: 2022-10-13

Corrective exercise helps personal trainers address postural and movement dysfunctions and prevent injury in clients, such as with the hip flexors. Too much hip flexion can lead to tight hips, which causes hip flexor problems in clients. This results in hindered exercise performance and increased risk of injury.

Many of these issues arise from muscle imbalances in the surrounding anatomy. Hip muscle action heavily influences muscles such as the glutes, hamstrings, and lumbar spine. With so many other muscle groups contributing to improper biomechanics, it is important to address the hip joint and the surrounding anatomy.

Let’s dig into common hip flexor issues and causes, plus how you can use corrective exercise to prevent or address problems with these muscles.

    Hip Flexor Anatomy And Function

These flexor muscles are located around the hip joint. As their name suggests, they aid in hip flexion. That makes them important for movements that involve lifting the knee, such as when walking or running. You also use your hip flexors when kicking or bending forward.

Another function of the flexor muscles is to support and stabilize both the pelvis and spine. This provides better postural control. It also keeps your back and pelvic area in better alignment.

When we talk about the hip flexors, we are referencing five different muscles:

    Isometric Gluteus Medius Exercise

The isometric gluteus medius exercise targets the gluteus medius muscle, which connects the upper thigh bone to the pelvis. It is one of the main stabilizer muscles that helps control the rotation of your hip and thigh bones.

This exercise is important as it prevents the opposite side of the pelvis from dropping while walking, running, or standing on one leg. It is especially valuable for seniors who want to improve their stability and balance.

Isometric exercises are those in which one muscle works against the next. This one requires a belt or strap.

To do the isometric gluteus maximum exercise:

  • Lie on one side.
  • Place a belt around both ankles so that your ankles are slightly wider than your hips.
  • Lift your top leg up, pressing your opposite leg toward the ground. Keep your knees straight.
  • Hold this position for five seconds, keeping tension in both directions. There won’t be much movement, but you should feel your thigh muscles tightening.
  • Release, pause, and repeat 10 times.

The adductors span from various points on the public bone to several locations on the backs of the femurs. For this reason, they are often referred to as the groin muscles.

If you squeeze your legs together, youll feel the muscles of your inner thigh activating these are the adductors.
