Hip Misalignment Cause Of Knee Pain

Runners hurt their knees more often than they do any other part of their body. And the most common knee injury is patellofemoral pain syndrome . Matt Fitzgerald, a training intelligence specialist for PEAR Sports, says that orthopedists used to believe that PFPS was associated with chondromalacia, or fissuring of the cartilage in the joint.

Following the demise of that premise, Fitzgerald said that medical professionals speculated that the primary cause of PFPS is improper tracking of the patella during running. He now says that recent research shows that the most common cause of PFPS is a genu valgum, or knock knee effect that is related to weakness in the hip musculature.

Fitzgerald explains it this way. At the stance phase of running, when one foot is in contact with the ground, the muscles on the outside of the hip must become active to prevent the body from tipping toward the unsupported side. If those muscles are not able to do their job properly, the leg goes into genu valgum to compensate.

The University of Calgary enlisted 25 runners to participate in a study. Fifteen of the runners had PFPS and 10 did not. For three weeks, those with the sore knees participated in exercises designed to strengthen their hip abductors. The 10 runners who were not injured did not.

Older Patients With Arthritis

Some patients, particularly middle-aged and elderly patients with hip and/or knee arthritis, experience a strange sensation thats called referred pain. Referred pain is essentially pain thats felt in a different place. This happens because the nerves that make us feel pain run through our body: the nerves that supply the hip also travel to the knee, and if the nerve is irritated at the hip, you may feel it at the knee.

Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of a joint. It means that the padding in the affected joint wears away. Gluteus medius is one of the most important muscles around the hip to maintain the pelvic alignment by controlling the pelvic tilting or drop on the leg that is off the ground during dynamic movements like walking and running, thus reducing excessive forces on the knee joint.

When you think about how the bodys systems work together, you wont be surprised to learn that hip misalignment can cause back pain. This happens because misaligned hips can pull the back out of alignment, which can cause all sorts of problems, including herniated discs, sciatica, muscle spasms, and stressed soft tissue.

What Treatment Options Are Available

Stretching helps loosens the muscles around the pelvis, which can help alleviate pain and fix minor issues that contribute to misalignment. Hip stretches like the 90/90 stretch, the side plank, and the superman are all stretches you can do at home to improve symptoms. But note that these stretches can create a slight discomfort in the affected area. Its best to stop immediately if you experience pain during these exercises, as pain is not a good sign.

While some stretches can help, its not recommended to perform extreme stretches in an attempt to pop it into place. Without a solid understanding of what is happening, managing the problem alone may aggravate the injury and create an even bigger problem. If you have a child you think has a misaligned hip, you may want to take them to get tested for scoliosis just to be safe. Most children who have this condition will grow out of it, but they still need to be monitored by a medical professional.

  • Staying active. Keep joints healthy from the get-go. Even just 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise five times a week strengthens the muscles that support and stabilize your hips and knees and helps joints stay limber.
  • Protecting your joints. Of course, injuries cant be completely avoided, but be careful when lifting heavy objects, and take breaks when you are doing something that puts stress on your hips or knees.
  • Keeping a healthy lifestyle. The best defense is offense. Sleep, healthy diet, exercise and stress management all can contribute to keeping your joints healthy.
