How Are Neck And Shoulder Pain Diagnosed
- X-rays: Plain X-rays can reveal narrowing of the space between two spinal bones, arthritis-like diseases, tumors, slipped discs, narrowing of the spinal canal, fractures and instability of the spinal column.
- MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging is a noninvasive procedure that can reveal the detail of neural elements, as well as problems with the tendons and ligaments.

Sitting Tips For Hip Pain:
- Make sure your office chair, car seat, and other places you sit often are good for your posture.
- Add back or seat support to improve your posture when youre sitting. Use a firm cushion or foam base.
- Check where your feet land when youre sitting. They should be flat on the floor.
- Use a footstool to rest your feet on when youre sitting.
- Avoid sitting on a very soft surface like a bed or sofa for too long.
- Avoid using very hard surfaces like a wooden chair, stool, or bench. A firm but cushioned surface molds to your body somewhat and helps to support your hips when sitting.

What’s Causing The Pain
Dr. Elson says pain in the side of your hip most often results from one of the following conditions:
Tendinitis. This is an inflammation of the tendons that connect the gluteal muscles in your buttocks to the hip bone. “Tendinitis develops because of muscle imbalance. It could be from a lack of activity, crossing your legs, or even sitting on a wallet,” Dr. Elson says.
Overuse injury. When you walk or run, weak hip and buttock muscles can tighten and irritate the iliotibial band a long band of connective tissue that runs from the knee to the hip. It merges with the gluteal muscles to stabilize the leg.
Tight muscles in the buttocks and hip. If the gluteal muscles and IT band are too tight, they pull at the thighbone where they attach, and that causes pain on the side.
Spine problems. “The body isn’t always smart in recognizing where the pain is coming from,” Dr. Elson explains, “and spine arthritis, a pinched nerve, or bones in the spine rubbing together can create pain in the side of your hip.”

Relieving Bedtime Hip Pain
In addition to medical treatment, there are some things you can do to avoid hip pain while you sleep. One of the biggest causes of nighttime hip pain is sleeping on your side a position most Americans prefer. Sleeping on an injured or arthritic hip puts pressure on the joint, so it’s really no surprise that your symptoms are worse.

3. Tendinitis and bursitis Many tendons around the hip connect the muscles to the joint. These tendons can easily become inflamed if you overuse them or participate in strenuous activities.
